Bear spray is most importantly tested on a wide variety of bears.  Additionally special formulation is created to work well even if a bear is wet.  When you are fishing in the great northwest is one of those times that running into a bear is pretty easy.

I recommend large pepper sprays for home defense.  Even if you have a firearm all of the family needs to be trained to shoot.  Large pepper spray provides another defense alternative.
